Kowhainui Home - Wanganui
Kowhainui has provided compassionate care and wonderful companionship for older people in Wanganui for over 40 years.
Set in a semi-rural environment near Virginia Lake Reserve, Kowhainui offers luxurious accommodation and facilities, beautifully landscaped grounds and courtyards.
We have 37 single rooms offering peace and privacy with professional care on hand. Our services are designed to take care of residents' day-to-day needs and emotional wellbeing while maintaining strong links with their families and wider community.
Recreation programme
Guests at Kowhainui enjoy a varied range of interesting and lively activities, including:
- arts and crafts
- indoor bowls
- knitting groups
- reading groups
- bingo.
Rest Home
Moving into residential care can be a positive decision for everyone concerned. Our Rest Home supports older people who cannot manage at home. Enabling you to maintain your independence and privacy in home-like surroundings is our goal.
Hospital care
Kowhainui offers full hospital level care. We have 39 beds and qualified registered nurses and support staff.
Day Activity Programme
We offer a stimulating day care programme for older people who live elsewhere. Transport can be arranged.
Respite care
If you are caring for an older person, occasionally you need time out to refresh. Kowhainui provides a place for the person you care for while you get the rest you need. It's a flexible service to suit you.
Respite care may be funded by your local District Health Board or you can arrange it directly with us and pay for it privately.
Community Support
We can visit older people in their own homes and assist with household tasks and personal care by arrangement.
Rental flats
Kowhainui has 12 rental flats situated close to the Rest Home. Tenants are welcome to participate in Rest Home activities at any time.
Licence to Occupy Villas
Licence to Occupy Villas allow residents to enjoy an active and independent lifestyle, confident that assistance is close at hand when needed.
Convalescence
We can look after people as they recover from surgery or illness. Our registered nurses and trained support staff provide meals and help with personal care for as long as it's required. This can be in our Home or yours.

Accessing any of our services is easy and worry-free. You can be referred by a needs assessment agency or your doctor, or you can call us directly. Enliven will fit around your requirements - all you need to do is ask.
